I am an independent reporter and editor based in the Pacific Northwest.
My work brings together thinking from different fields of expertise and experience. My words hold tensions and at times contradictions. I attempt to convey the complexity of the world and highlight those looking for answers to perplexing questions. Iām passionate about including underrepresented voices. I see the importance of the hyperlocal while seeking to understand our connection to the global.
My work has appeared in Sojourners, High Country News, Grist, YES!, and Atmos.
For five years, I served as science editor at Christianity Today. I led strategy on coverage for the science section, evaluating and approving pitches, and guiding writers from a first draft to a published final. I also led and organized writers workshops to develop capacity for writers to integrate theology and science in their work.
I also worked for eight years as a community journalist covering suburban governments and school districts in the Portland, Oregon, area. I won several awards from the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for investigative reporting on four-decades old sexual abuse by a swim coach, for enterprise reporting on an accidental death of a boy on the school playground, and for comprehensive coverage on how urban water rights threatened endangered salmon.
I have an M.A. in international studies from the University of Washington. I am a member of the Northwest Science Writers Association, the Society of Environmental Journalists, and the Religion News Association.
